Agra
World famous as the city of the Taj Mahal, Agra was once a bustling imperial capital of the Great Mughals: emperors associated with a spectacular period of India’s history. Dominated by the magnificent Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal the city offers delightful reminders of its glorious past around almost every corner.
India’s most popular tourist destination, Agra is easily accessible by road from both, Delhi and Jaipur. These three cities form the points of the ‘Golden Triangle’ that contains the cream of northern India’s ancient monuments.
Not only is it a photographer’s paradise, it offers the visitor a wide variety of experiences:
Must see: the breathtakingly beautiful Taj Mahal; majestic Agra Fort by the river Yamuna; opulently decorated Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah; stunning inlays on the gatehouse at Sikandra; and the 16th century Mughal capital at Fatehpur Sikri.
Cultural heritage: In Agra even today it is possible to see a demonstration of Pietra Dura - the cutting and fitting of polished gems into a stone surface – the ancient art employed in embellishing the Taj Mahal and kept alive today by local artisans.
Shopping: While in India, Agra is the place to shop for items ranging from garden statuary and gemstones to gorgeously inlaid marble plates, boxes, coasters, and even table-tops.
Enjoy Nature: a variety of Bird-life may be spotted in the wetlands of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary around 60kilometres from Agra.
