Jaisalmer
A photographer’s delight, words fail to convey the sheer magic of Jaisalmer. Founded in the 12th century, the town prospered immensely due to its location on a trade route carrying silks, spices and other exotica between India, Persia and Central Asia. Today, Jaisalmer Fort sprawls like an Indian fairytale castle atop a ridge at the edge of the Thar Desert; while in the bustling town below, the enormous wealth of its ancient merchants is testified by the exquisitely ornamented mansions they once inhabited.
Connected by road with Jodhpur and Bikaner, Jaisalmer offers the visitor a wide variety of experiences.
Must see: such as the spectacular Jaisalmer Fort - its ramparts interrupted by 99 bastions; Salim Singh ki Haveli and Patwon ki Haveli – two mansions of Jaisalmer’s ancient merchants; Gadi Sagar Lake surrounded by temples and shrines of unknown antiquity; the town’s bazaars bustling with villagers in colourful traditional costumes.
Other Activities: such as an Excursion to Sam Sand Dunes; trying a Camel Ride on the golden sands of the Thar desert, or going for a camel safari; enjoying informal performances by Rajasthani Folk dancers / musicians.
