Rajasthan

Rajasthan, literally, ‘Land of Kings’, is the home of Rajputs – Sons of Kings – warrior clans who held sway in northwestern India for 1000 years.  Their stories of romance, chivalry and heroism live on today, recounted in the songs of bards as though the events occurred but yesterday, and marked by countless memorials.

Among holiday destinations in India, Rajasthan is without parallel.  Not only is it a photographer’s paradise, it offers the visitor a wide variety of experiences:

Majestic forts and palaces: such as the majestic forts of Jaisalmer, Jodhur and Amber; the opulent city palaces of Udaipur and Jaipur; and other fascinating structures such as the 18th century Jantar Mantar Royal Observatory built by Jaipur’s maharaja; royal cenotaphs; and the Hawa Mahal – ‘palace of winds’.

Art & cultural heritage: such as colourful murals on the Painted Haveli’s of Shekhawati; intricate stuccos on Jaisalmer’s mansions; the folk dance performances evolved over centuries; many unique museums with displays varying from collections of royal crystal, folk crafts, traditional musical instruments and weapons and even diverse regional styles of tying turbans!

Shopping heaven: While in India, Rajasthan is ‘the’ place to shop for products ranging from silk rugs and gemstones to hand block printed textiles and traditional puppets.  The range is almost endless.

Enjoy Nature: With terrain varying from desert scrublands to sand dunes, rugged mountains and forests, horse safaris and camel safaris present great adventure opportunities.  Among its numerous wildlife parks, Ranthambhore National Park is renowned for tigers, while a variety of Bird-life may be spotted in the wetlands of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary.
